For Finley by J. Nathan

A sports romance not to be missed!!
Blurb
Finlay Thatcher is a lost soul, guilt-ridden after the death of her twin brother. When Alabama’s football coach gives her the opportunity to work for him, she knows it’s her chance to move on, even if it means living her brother’s dream.

Caden Brooks is Alabama’s star quarterback. He’s got it all. The attention of adoring fans. A girlfriend who’d do anything to hold on to him. And a future in the pros. He’s getting along just fine until Finlay steps into his life, despising him at first sight and pushing his buttons like no other.

Unfortunately for Finlay, and her attempt to keep Caden at arm’s length, there’s nothing Caden loves more than a challenge. The problem with this challenge is she comes with a secret that has the power to destroy everything.

Review
This was my first book by J. Nathan and I was so impressed! I love sports romances and this one was a great twist on the classic football romance. When Finlay is invited to help her brother’s football coach she can’t say no. After the tragic death of her twin and the guilt that she carries with her, she takes the job to honour his memory – to live the dream that he no longer can. She’d love her new job if it wasn’t for one person – Caden Brooks. The star quarterback who took the position her brother once held. The star quarterback that she couldn’t loathe anymore if she tried. Arrogant, full of himself and so damn confident she just wants him to leave her alone but she didn’t count on how determined Caden can be when he puts his mind to it.

Finlay is the first girl to not worship the ground Caden walks on in…well, ever. She’s intrigued him and he can’t stay away. The more she pushes him away, the more he pushes back. She may hate him but even she can’t deny the attraction between them. Will the two of them be able to move on from the past?

Loved this story! It was witty, packed with emotion and a whole lot of sass! Finlay and Caden were both great characters, and I really enjoyed reading their conversations! Highly recommended!

“You’re awfully quiet this morning.”

My eyes cut to Brooks. His ear buds dangled over his shoulders. I tugged mine out. “Huh?”

“Just wondering what pearls of wisdom you’re gonna bestow upon me today.”

“You need to stop hesitating when you drop back,” I told him, much to his obvious surprise. “Either do it or don’t. Did you see how those guys pummeled you?”

“See it? I was under it.”

“Yeah, well, your offensive line sucks. But you can’t give the defense a chance to get to you. Know where you’re throwing and hit the mark. Your receivers are good. They’ll get there.”

He stared at me, his eyes narrowed slits.

I wiped my face with the small towel I’d draped over the treadmill screen. “Don’t worry, you’ve got potential.”

He laughed disbelievingly. “Potential? I’m the starting quarterback for Alabama.”

Those words—especially leaving his mouth—cut deep. The only reason he was playing was because Cole wasn’t.

“I’ve got more than potential,” he assured me.

“Yeah. You’ve got a massive ego ready to destroy small countries,” I said, my words clipped as I remembered why I despised him so much.

“All great athletes have egos. You’ve got to.”

Wow. My hatred toward him was growing by the second. “And you’re humble.”

He laughed. Didn’t he notice I wasn’t laughing? I hoped to God he didn’t think I was flirting. This was as far from flirting as one could get.

We ran in silence, the pounding of our sneakers on the treadmills mirroring the pounding in my head brought on by his arrogance.

“What’s your deal anyway?”

I glanced over at him. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Not many girls know so much about football and wake up at four in the morning to run.”

I scoffed. “Hope you’re not implying I thought you’d be here.”

“I didn’t say that.”

“But you were thinking it.”

He smirked. “You’d be amazed at the lengths girls go to get my attention.”

My eyes flared. “I suppose you think I took some crash course in football, too, just to impress you with all my knowledge.”

“Just saying.”

My face scrunched as I pressed the arrow on the screen to quicken my pace. “Keep dreaming, superstar.”

“Girls have done some whacked out shit.”

My eyes jumped between the wall in front of me and Brooks. “First of all, I’m not about to steal your towel because it has your sweat on it, nor will I be swiping your jockstrap to sell online. We, my friend, are victims of bad timing.”

“Bad timing?”

“Yeah. Anytime you’re in my space, it’s bad,” I assured him.

For the sake of her sanity, Kayla must make a tough decision, even if it means leaving everything behind.

Review
What a finale! Having read the previous three books I wasn’t too sure where this fourth book was going to go but it didn’t disappoint. I don’t want to give anything away so I won’t go into too much detail but in this book you do get to see a different side to Gage which I loved. Kayla is being pulled in every direction, never knowing what is best for her and her daughter. Whenever her and Gage are on the brink of happiness something, or someone, has to get in the way. Will these two come out on top? As with the other books this isn’t a lovey dovey romance, it’s dark and gritty and not for the faint hearted. I really enjoyed reading these two’s story, and I hope there’s more!

“It really boils down to one thing,” Simone said. “Do you trust him?”

She made it sound so easy, but as I examined my feelings and tore apart his words, dissected his actions, I realized that I did. Mostly. There were plenty of things not to trust him about—anytime he came near me with his cock at the ready and a belt or whip in his fist, for instance—but on a fundamental level, I did trust him.

If I didn’t, why would I keep putting myself through this? Why keep bending and bending and bending?

“I do trust him,” I said, swiping my bangs to the side. “I love him. More than I could ever say. More than even makes sense.”

“Then I’d put the baby mama out of your head. He married you, and though I won’t begin to understand or approve of your…weird relationship, he has always come across as pretty fucking whipped.”

I almost spluttered my tea all over the table at her words. Gage, whipped? But the more I thought about it, the more it clicked, because when you got down to the nitty-gritty, we had each other wrapped. “I guess you’re right. I just wish I could get that woman out of my head. The way she touches him, and the way she glares at me…God, Simone, she makes me see red and green at the same time.”

“You need a fucking hobby.” Simone’s mouth twisted into a scowl, but her gaze softened as she said it to take out some of the sting.

“A hobby?” I asked, absently picking at my half-eaten quiche. Apparently, the subject of Katherine made me lose my appetite. Or maybe it was the smell of overcooked cheese. I pushed the plate away, scrunching my nose. “Why do you say that?”

Simone made a scoffing sound, and I glanced up to find her reclined in her seat, arms crossed. “To hear you talk, it sounds like your whole life revolves around Gage and what he may or may not be doing with Katherine.”

A hobby might not be a bad idea. Maybe I could start collecting trinkets, like dolphins or dragons.

Or elephants.

Definitely elephants. Lord knew I had plenty of those in my life. Gigantic ones that ate up too much space and sucked up all the air. One stood between Gage and me in the form of Katherine. But the biggest one sat smack in the middle of Simone and me.

This elephant’s name was Ian, and he’d grown too secure in his comfy spot since that damn note had magically appeared on my door. But it was easier, safer, to focus on my marriage and the interloper named Katherine. The subject of Ian was too dangerous. Too painful.

Simone must have agreed because she didn’t bring him up once.

In the small town of Breckshire Wyoming, everybody knows everybody, so when Evan Tyler walks into the same bar she’s drowning her grief in, Phoenix knows that he’s new in town. Phoenix has experienced a tragedy that nobody ever wants to experience. He vows to help her, encouraging her to rise from the ashes and live once again. Evan doesn’t know that just by being in her life, he’s bound to send her into a tailspin, because both of them are keeping things from each other, and Phoenix may not be strong enough to handle what she finds out.

REVIEW

Wow what a book! I’m always a bit unsure when I start novels about widows and second chances – I never know if it’ll be too sad! But I was not disappointed with this beautiful book!

Phoenix married the man of dreams in her early twenties but on their third wedding anniversary, he never came home. Now a year later her grief is still too much to bear. She left her teaching job, she never leaves the house, constantly ignoring her friends and she drowns her sorrows with drink every day. Nothing and no-one is getting through to her. That is until Evan moves to town.

Evan is the kind of guy fairytales are made out of. He’s kind, patient and a complete gentleman. Plus he’s funny and really hot! He worms himself into Phoenix’s life and gradually pulls her out of the darkness she’s lived in for so long. But when their friendship starts to become something more, will Phoenix finally be able to move on and find happiness?

Oh how I love this book! Phoenix and Evan’s story is just so beautiful and I loved every second of it. You really do not want to miss this amazing book!

Kenna is desperate. Living for her next meal, she will do whatever it takes to have some semblance of a life and if that means hooking up with a rich guy for a night or two for money she’ll do it. When her step-brother of sorts offers her an amazing opportunity she can hardly refuse. She thought it would be easy, just like every other job she’s done, but she hadn’t counted on Zach. Even though he thinks she’s there of her own free will he doesn’t want to take the small bit of herself she’s offering – he wants all of her, including her heart. Kenna has never felt truly cherished and has never felt worth much. But Zach is kind to her, cherishes her and makes her wish she was good enough for him. Will Kenna be able to resist him? And what if Zach finds out the truth about her?

I really enjoyed this book! The dynamic between these two was fab and I really liked the storyline. And Zach – ugh he’s so yummy 😉 Go and get Hooker Heels now!

Surge (Fastlane #1) by Sloan Storm

Today is the day! Dyson Vix has officially arrived! Surge by Sloan Storm is the first book in the brand new Fastlane series about the hot racers of Formula 1! You NEED to read this book!

Blurb

Dyson Vix. The bad boy of Formula One Racing.

The first time I met him he was completely naked, and he couldn’t have cared less.

The second time I saw Dyson, he just stood there, staring at me. His fire suit hung low on his waist, and his body was dripping in sweat, grease and… well, you get the idea.

The ultimate playboy, there isn’t a hairpin turn he can’t handle or a woman he can’t have. Dyson lives life like he drives – hard, determined, and like it might be his last day.

We couldn’t have been more different. After a family tragedy, I’ve been left to raise my nephew, Simon, all alone. Raising him has given me more joy than I could’ve imagined, but it came at a price. He is my entire world, and everything I do is with him in mind. I haven’t had a date in months, instead focusing solely on him. Man troubles are the last thing we need, especially the kind reckless thrill seeker Dyson Vix would bring.

But fate has other ideas.

I’ve been thrust into his fast-paced world, and the more time I spend with him — the more I see of the troubled man behind the roguish charm — the more my resolve crumbles. Our chemistry is undeniable but isn’t without risk. Jealousy and threats to my home life mean I could lose everything I’ve worked so hard to protect.

The stakes have never been higher. Will we make it, or are we destined to crash and burn?

Review

This is a fast-paced, heart pumping roller-coaster ride of a book! There’s drama, romance and some moments that are both heart breaking and utterly hilarious! I could NOT put this book down!

Ava hasn’t had the easiest time of late. When her sister died she became the sole carer of her nephew Simon. Whilst she completely loves and adores him her life was irrevocably changed. Her plans for med school were put on hold and she instead became a nurse to pay both the bills and Simon’s school fees.

When a drop dead gorgeous F1 driver turns up at the hospital with 2 Grid Girls in tow she’s less than impressed. His arrogant, cocky attitude was frustrating in every possible way. Not to mention his little sexcapade in the exam room when she left him in their with the girls. So when she’s offered the chance to become the team’s medic she’s hesitant to say the least. But with the money they’re offering and her desperate need for funds she can’t refuse.

When Ava didn’t know Dyson, only his playboy ways, he was easy to resist but when she starts to see the man behind the charm her resistance begins to crumble. A playboy driver is the last thing her and her little family need but how long will Dyson allow her to tell him no?

Holy smokes this book! Dyson and Ava’s chemistry is simply off the charts, and their passion coupled with the drama and emotion this book is crammed full of, made it incredibly hard to put down – in fact I devoured it in one sitting! I can NOT wait for more of this series. If it’s anything like Surge we are in for a real treat! I mean Dyson? Totally yummy 😉

Excerpt

It wasn’t the first time I’d seen a man’s bare ass first thing in the morning.

But one that… perfect?

No.

Never.

With my fingers still wrapped around the door handle, I froze in place, my eyes inappropriately fixed on the man’s partially exposed, lean and muscular backside. Morning sunlight shined on him through the exam room window, casting the shadow of his hard body beneath the thin fabric of the exam gown.

I stood there for a moment too long, temporarily forgetting I was there to do my job. Just then, the man, who had been looking out the window, turned in my direction.

We locked eyes. He arched an eyebrow.

Shit.

As quickly and as subtly as I could, I averted my gaze and instead snapped my eyes to his chart which I held in my free hand. Around the same time, a strong odor of over-applied perfume entered my awareness. What’s worse, it smelled like a mix of cotton candy and sweat—cheap and tacky.

Continuing into the room, the source of the aroma appeared in my peripheral vision. To my left sat two women. One a blonde, the other, a redhead. They looked to be in their early to mid-twenties, around my age, and by the way they dressed, not from around here—Austin that is.

“Hello,” I said, flashing a polite smile at them.

Their eyes met mine with an icy glare. They didn’t respond.

I looked away from them and back towards the man.

“Mr.… Vix?”

He took an extra second to reply. His eyes wandered along my body.

Wow? Really?

At last, he nodded and looked at me. “Dyson,” he said.

The door to the exam room closed behind me with a hiss of the hydraulic swing arm.

“All right,” I began, shaking my head a bit.

“Dyson… Dr. Wilcox will be in in just a moment. In the meantime, I need to check your vital signs.”

Dyson walked towards me and stopped about a foot or so away.

“Should I disrobe?”

I blinked. Clearing my throat, I stammered a response, “Um, n-no. That won’t be necessary.”

He winked at me. “Another time then.”

This had to be a joke.

I straightened my spine and nodded in the direction of the exam table. “Have a seat, Mr. Vix.”

But instead of walking towards the table, the man looked at me again.

“It’s Dyson.”

“Right, my apologies. Have a seat, Dyson.”

The thin tissue paper covering the length of the table crinkled and crackled as he sat down on it. Dyson swung his legs casually over the side and hooked his hands along the padded edge. Composing myself, I spent the next few minutes getting his vital signs without any further interruptions.

Once finished, I looked at him.

“Dyson, I need to draw some blood for the tests we’re required to take. Do needles bother you?”

My eyes locked on his. They were a shade of blue that I’d never seen before. Blueish gray, like steel. He reached up and slid his fingers through his dirty-blonde hair.

“Nope,” he replied with an easy shrug.

“Don’t bother me at all.”

From behind, I sensed the two women watching our exchange. Their silence was the only clue I needed that they were more than just friends with him.

A couple of minutes later, I’d finished drawing his blood.

Only one thing remained before Dr. Wilcox would come in and conduct the full exam. I walked to the other side of the exam room, picked up a urine sample cup and made my way back towards him, extending it in his direction.

One corner of his mouth turned upward in a deviant curl. Wordless, he eased off the exam table, took it from me, and passed by on the way to the restroom, next to the entrance of the exam room.

My head moved on a swivel while he walked. Dyson made no effort to cinch up the back of his exam gown. He stopped, catching me looking yet again. However, instead of saying anything, he gestured over his shoulder towards the two women.

“Is it okay if I have some company?”

My mouth drifted open. “I…”

The expression on his face was indecipherable. Was he being serious? The truth was, no one ever asked me a question like that during an exam before. On the other hand, nothing about this exam was normal so far.

Dyson chuckled at my lack of a reply. “Joke.”

I responded with an uneasy laugh.

Why was this guy making me feel like a thirteen year old?

Was I blushing?

I reached up and touched my cheek with a subtle swipe.

It felt like it.

Just then, Dyson began to toss the cup in the air with casual flicks of his hand. He gestured towards the women, pointing to the one on the left.

“That’s Svetlana,” he began before he nodded in the direction of the other one.

“And that’s Anastasia.”

Yep. Not from Austin.

Once he finished, he looked back at me and raised his eyebrows. I looked at him for a moment, not sure of the meaning. A second later, it dawned on me.

“Oh, I, um,” I said. “My name is Ava. Ava Walters.”

“Girls, keep Ava company while I’m gone.”

Seconds later, Dyson disappeared into the bathroom, closing the door behind him. I turned my attention back to the women, who seemed less thrilled with me now than ever.

“Anastasia and Svetlana?” I began, summoning all the politeness and professionalism I could. “Is that… are you Russian?”

They glanced at each other for a moment before cackling with laughter. Without answering me, they spoke to one another in a language I didn’t understand. Once they’d finished, they looked away from me and returned their attention to their phones.

I shook my head and tried to ignore their rudeness. Instead, I used the time to make notes in Dyson’s chart. Around that time, the door to the exam room opened. Dr. Wilcox walked inside, nodding in the direction of the women.

“Good morning,” he said.

Their attention never wavered from their phones. Dr. Wilcox approached me with a suspicious frown on his face.

“Mr. Vix? Where…?”

I nodded towards the bathroom.

“Ah, I see. Very good.” He extended his hand towards me, unfolding his fingers as he did.

“May I?”

I passed Dyson’s paperwork to him. Dr. Wilcox perused my notes for several moments.

“Do you need me for anything else, Dr. Wilcox?” I asked.

Dr. Wilcox raised his hand to his chin as he studied Dyson’s chart.

“No,” he muttered. “Not right now, thank you, Ava.”

With that, I turned and started to walk away, when Dr. Wilcox spoke once again.

“On second thought, Ava, there is something I need to discuss with you.”

I looked at him. “Yes?”

However, before he told me, the bathroom door opened, and Dyson appeared. He walked towards me with the nearly full sample cup in his hand. He shook it back and forth with a few quick snaps, causing the liquid inside to bubble.

“Be careful with that,” he said, passing it to me.

I took it from him. “Thank you. I will,” I deadpanned.

When I finished speaking, Dr. Wilcox introduced himself.

“Mr. Vix? I’m Dr. Wilcox.”

Dyson nodded. “Good to meet ya, Doc.”

Dr. Wilcox closed Dyson’s folder and patted it with his hand.

“Now that we’re done with your vital signs, blood work and the like, we just need to conduct a brief physical exam, and we’ll get you on your way. I know you’ve got to get back to the track.”

“All right,” Dyson replied.

“Would you like to do the exam one-on-one?” Dr. Wilcox said. “You know, have some privacy?”

Dyson shrugged.

“Doesn’t matter to me. Everyone can stay. I don’t care.”

Dr. Wilcox was the consummate professional, always putting the needs and comfort of his patients above everything else. Satisfied Dyson was ready to proceed, he nodded, “Okay then, we’ll have you disrobe first and then come back over to the exam table.”

Without wasting a second, Dyson dropped the gown to his feet.

Still holding the urine sample in my hand, I stared in slack-jawed awe. There was no getting around it. I leered at the man. While he hadn’t yet noticed me, the women did.

“Hey! Girl!” one of them growled at me in a thick European accent.

Dyson and Dr. Wilcox turned towards me.

“Is everything all right, Ava?” Dr. Wilcox asked.

Ignoring the girl, I nodded, refocused on the task at hand, and walked in the direction of Dr. Wilcox to assist with the examination. Picking up Dyson’s folder from the exam table, I opened it and readied myself to take notes for Dr. Wilcox, refusing to look at Dyson.

After all, one look was all I needed to know he was physical perfection. Lean, muscular, not to mention the most well-endowed man I’d ever seen. This exam couldn’t get over fast enough.

Review

I’ve read quite a few Rock Star/Boyband type romances but I have to say I really loved this take on the genre! Logan and her bestfriend Stacy have just graduated and as a present their parents are jetting them off to Hawaii for a week! Things couldn’t be more perfect with each of them securing new jobs to start when they come back. The only dampener on the celebrations is Logan breaking up with her waste of space ex. Fed up of his playboy ways she breaks it off with him and promises to start enjoying her new single girl life, starting with their awesome stay in paradise.

Staying on a private island neither of them expected to have such a drop dead gorgeous neighbour, but one look at Michael leaves Logan breathless. After a week full of romance using her middle name as an alias, Logan is reluctant to leave but this was merely a holiday fling to start her new single life. Leaving Michael on the island and returning home, she’s excited to start her new job working as a PA for a rock band.

On the first day of her new job, her new boss is yet to arrive. Having met the rest of the band things started out great until her new boss arrived – her new boss being Michael, or rather Kacen as he too used his middle name. Now stuck working for her holiday lover she has no choice but to keep it professional for the sake of her job. But how long can they resist one another?

Absolutely loved this story! The chemistry between Logan and Kacen was brilliant and the other boys in the band were just as loveable as Kacen. Loved the plot and the drama, definitely would love to read more about these guys!

That didn’t stop Finn from wanting her, so he took her. After one taste he knew he wouldn’t be able to stop. Everytime she screamed his name an indelible blemish was etched onto his soul. Claiming him just as he had claimed her.

What they were doing was reckless which only added fuel to the flames. With each encounter they edged closer to the fire. Closer to disaster. There was no way for things to end well, but there was no way he could stop.

Lines get crossed, blurred and scratched down his back as they both give into their Secret Obsession.

Review

I’ve read my fair share of stepbrother romances recently, so I wasn’t sure what to expect from this take on the genre. Being a novella it’s relatively short but nevertheless it’s still a good read.

Finn works on his family’s ranch, and he very much embodies everything a sexy cowboy should. When his mother re-marries he wasn’t expecting his new step-sister to move in too. But fed up of school Raven moves in for the summer and with their parents newly married she has to sleep in the room just down the hall from him. With a dancer’s body and that glint in her eye Finn finds it hard to stay away from her.

When their desire for one another becomes too much and they finally give in to their desire, there’s no stopping them any longer. Trying to keep their affair a secret whilst living in the same house as their parents is hard enough but as their feelings for one another grow they soon become reluctant to hide their feelings for much longer. But what will their relationship cost them and their parents?

This book was a good, easy read and as a novella its a fairly quick read. The chemistry between Finn and Raven is indeed very steamy and I really loved the cowboy element to the book. My only issue was the ending where they encounter a problem in their relationship but then it skips to the epilogue without detailing how the problem was fixed and often that’s my favourite part of the story. Other than this though Secret Obsession was another great stepbrother romance.

Raven stood amongst the spectators as Finn strolled towards the bull. She might as well have been standing alone. Her entire world had been narrowed down to focus on him. The sexy sway of his gait, the way his t-shirt hugged the muscles in his back, and his nice tight ass. And she loved that he wasn’t cocky. Finn had an easy confidence about him that she found very disarming. His warm brown eyes seemed to look right into her, and made her wonder how much of her soul he could see.

Hopefully not enough to know how bad she wanted him. He turned back to wink at her and she felt the flush rise up her neck and cheeks.

In one quick leap, Finn threw one long leg and then the other over the bull. He straightened his back, placed one hand on the hook, and raised the other in signal of his readiness. The music started and after a backwards count from three to one, he was set in motion. After his first five seconds, Raven knew he wouldn’t be falling off anytime soon.

He was magnetic. Looking cool, confident, and in total control as he kept his balance while the bull jerked and swayed. The way he eased his hips forward and arched his back to move with the momentum of the ride was beyond sexy. And the crowd ate it up. Some women cheered, others watched with the same dreamy expression. Finn was a living, breathing fantasy.

The guys placed bets. Most bet that he would last more than a minute. Others thought he would fall at the next unexpected shift. They were clearly haters. No doubt, Finn held the attention of every woman in the room.

He rode that bull for one minute and forty-five seconds. Then he let go on his own accord and threw himself onto the mat, hopping to his feet in the same motion. Raven stood in awe, with her lips slightly parted when he approached her.

“Your turn.”

“I–”

Finn shook his head and took her by the arm to guide her to the bull.

“No backing out Miss ‘I know how to work my hips’. You’re up!”

Raven didn’t have time to protest. Before she knew it, Finn had her lifted onto the bull and adjusted for the ride. Once she was seated and the popular country song began to play, her nerves settled and her natural performer’s nature kicked in.

“You good?” Finn asked. Raven waved him off, shaking off the trepidation with a wink of her own.

“I got this!”

She raised one arm to signal and then she began to move.

Standing with his arms crossed and a big smile on his face, Finn watched on with a mixture of pride and enthusiasm. He hadn’t seen her, but he’d felt Raven’s eyes on him when he’d rode. Now he was able to watch her, and boy was it a treat.

After a shaky start, where it looked as if she would be thrown in her first three seconds, she righted herself, and rolled with the jerky motions of the bull, syncing to the beat of the music. He couldn’t stop staring at her, not even when Buck tapped him to comment on how hot she looked up there.

In his mind she was riding for him alone, like he was the only man in the room. Without thinking, Finn stalked forward, too drawn to her to stop, and jumped on the bull behind Raven. She laughed wildly and let out a loud hee-haw. He slid an arm around her waist and pulled her close.

“Hold on, baby,” he whispered in her ear.

Raven’s laughter died down to an uncontrollable smile at the erotic sensation of Finn being so close to her. Finn’s chest pressed against her back. His fingers clutched her hips to guide her to his tempo. And his obvious arousal pressed against the crease of her ass. If she weren’t having so much fun, she would have fainted from overheating.

While they rode he whispered and crooned words of encouragement in her ear. “That’s nice, baby,” and “I love the way you ride,” made her tingle down to her toes. It was all in fun, but she couldn’t stop thinking about how good his body felt against hers and how she could tell he felt the same way. But she knew that they had just crossed some sort of invisible line, a broken yet unspoken rule, and committed an infraction in the whole stepfamily hierarchy.

She knew she was supposed to care.

But she didn’t.

Where We Belong (Alabama Summer #4) by J. Daniels

There was a serious FANGIRL DOWN moment this past week when a surprise email landed in my inbox telling me I’ve been given Ben FREAKING Kelly to review!!!! As in I had him in my hands before anyone else – you can understand my excitement at this 😉

Blurb

From NY Times and USA Today bestselling author, J. Daniels, an Alabama Summer series novella.

Ben and Mia Kelly can’t seem to catch a break.

Grueling night shift and opposing schedules have left the passionate couple geared up and ready for some much needed alone time. There’s only one thing standing in their way.

Parenthood.

With two curious boys who have mastered the art of cock-blocking roaming the house, Ben and Mia, sexually frustrated beyond reason, quickly resort to surprise sexcapades and naughty little trysts whenever and however they can get them.

Who said anything about keeping things legal?

Assume the position. Things are about to heat up in the south.

Warning: This book is recommended for readers over the age of 18 due to strong language and explicit sexual content.

Review

Excitement does not even begin to cover what I felt when this little surprise landed on my Kindle! We have all been dying for some more of Ben FREAKING Kelly and J. Daniels has certainly given us some more….9 inches more to be exact 😉

Mia & Ben have been struggling recently. With Ben working nights and Mia juggling 2 small children, there hasn’t been time for them to be alone. Resorting to sexting and the odd dirty phone call they’ve reached the end of their tethers. When Ben stops working the night shift, they are finally on the same schedules but with two little boys cockblocking them at every turn they still can’t catch a break. When Mia can’t take it much longer she has to use her imagination and after that no where is safe. Changing rooms, the back of Ben’s cop car….with these two no where is safe.

This book is so hot it practically burned me! I mean for starters, Ben FREAKING Kelly is in it and secondly….it’s got Ben in it 😉 Full of our favourite Bama boys and girls this book will make you laugh out loud and invest in some new underwear. And there’s even a hint of what’s to come right at the end! And if that wasn’t enough, there’s more of Sir Nolan! And of course Chasey too – those two are just too cute! You would be an idiot not to get yourself a copy of this, seriously read it now!

There was nothing left for me here. To give Mom and Tex their final weeks together, it was time for me to go.

Review

I’ve really enjoyed this serial so far and can’t wait to see which direction it heads in. At the end of the last book a misunderstanding has Chelsea running away from the ranch and Travis. Now in different places they both find it difficult to forget the other yet Travis keeps holding back. He’s keeping a secret from Chelsea, making everyone around them swear not to tell her until he does. But the longer he keeps it from her the further apart they grow.

When circumstances lead them back to each other once again will Travis finally tell Chelsea the truth? With Travis’ Dad in a bad way they must support each other and find a way to make it work, even if that risks their relationship being discovered.

Tensions are definitely running high for Travis and Chelsea, with both their relationship, Travis’ Dad and him keeping secrets from Chelsea. Now Cozy is involved he has no choice but to come clean soon, and I can’t wait to see how it pans out! Bring on the finale!

Chelsea

I’d given in and accepted the gift of Tex’s pickup, an extended-cab Chevy. When I’d seen Mom and Tex off at the airport, I went back to the ranch to pack and wait for the next morning before making the thousand-mile drive to San Jose. It was a long drive, over seventeen hours in all, and the closest town to the half-way point was a wide place in the road called Rome, Oregon.
I pulled into a 1950s-era motel and stumbled out of the cab like a drunk on a staircase. My legs didn’t want to work, and I was hungry, having skipped lunch in favor of getting to my stopping place by dinner time. Feeling older than dirt, I asked the woman at the counter where I could get something to eat. Fortunately, the tiny restaurant attached to the nearby gas station was open. As I waited for my order of barbecue beef and coleslaw, I tried to text Cozy, only to discover that I was out of cell range.
The terrain I’d driven through was virtually deserted, so I shouldn’t have been surprised. It made me feel as if I’d dropped out of modern America and landed in an alternative universe where all the natives stared at me as if I were the alien. Ignoring the people passing by to get a better look at me, I dug into my meal with gusto, only to discover it was a far cry from the same items Mom had prepared for her barbecue on the fourth of July. How long ago that day seemed!
I knew I’d miss Cozy when I planned my itinerary. It didn’t seem right to leave before Mom and Tex did. There was a chance I’d never see him again, so I spent the last few days at the ranch trying to show him how much I’d always appreciated him. I hadn’t ever verbalized it, and it seemed too obvious to do so now, but I wanted him to know. He went along with my efforts as if I’d always brought him a fresh cup of coffee at breakfast, or baked his favorite chocolate-chip cookies in the blazing summer heat.
Now at the halfway point in my journey, I determined to stop looking back and instead look forward. I had the two canvasses in the back of the extended cab, carefully wrapped against the jostling they’d receive on the road. I had the rest of the photos, and I had the sketch. My task was set out for me.
I even had a schedule worked out. Most of the galleries didn’t open until noon, so I planned to paint in the mornings. I’d clean up and apply to the galleries for whatever positions they may have open in September in the afternoon, and in the evenings I’d search the internet for a gallery to take my series of paintings when they were done. I knew it would be a small one because I was unknown, and therefore, I needed to find one that specialized in Western art. It wasn’t a theme I’d ever studied before, so finding that one gallery that would give me a chance might take weeks. It was okay. It would take weeks to finish the series, too. And last of all, the pièce de résistance, the nude.
For that, I needed a canvas worthy of the subject. Six feet tall, almost life-sized, I’d paint Travis with all the passion he’d awakened in me. And if I was lucky, when I was done, he’d be out of my system and out of my heart. Because the brief fantasy we’d had together could never be. He wasn’t the man I’d built him up to be, and besides, there was the complication. The knowledge that always prickled the back of my neck when I thought about our trysts. He was my stepbrother. Off limits in the eyes of society.
That we’d shared not only sex, taboo as it was, but kinky sex, was a secret I’d take to my grave, except for Cozy’s knowledge. She would never tell, so it was something I’d lock away forever and try to be satisfied with whatever man I eventually landed for my own. I couldn’t imagine a future with a man like Travis in it. That would have been a fairy-tale come true.
As I went to bed that night in a lumpy old bed in a run-down motel in the middle of nowhere, I called up the memories. I’d give myself until I finished the nude painting to relive them, wallow in them, and dream about them.  And then I’d banish them forever.
Just before I went to sleep, a pang of loss made me shiver. How would I cope with Tex’s death and getting over Travis, without Cozy to run to when I needed a shoulder to cry on? She wouldn’t be there when I got to San Jose. I didn’t even know where she was going. I didn’t know when I’d ever felt so alone.

Souls Unfractured (Hades Hangmen #3) by Tillie Cole

This week the third book in the Hades Hangmen series by Tillie Cole, Souls Unfractured was released! And I could not have been more excited for Flame and Maddie’s story!

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000032_00049]

Blurb

“For fractured souls are like magnets.

Drawn to collide into an impossible bliss…”

Labeled a ‘Cursed’ woman of Eve from birth, Maddie has endured nothing but pain and repression at the hands of The Order’s most abusive elder, Moses. Now living with her sister in The Hangmen’s secluded compound, finally, Maddie, is free. Free from the suffocating faith she no longer believes in. Free from endless years of physical and mental torment.

Just… free…

At age twenty-one, the timid and shy Maddie is content to live within the confines of her new home—safe from the outside world, safe from harm and, strangely, protected by the Hangmen’s most volatile member; the heavily pierced and tattooed, Flame.

Flame.

The man who ceaselessly watches over her with his midnight dark and searing eyes. The man who protects her with a breath-taking intensity. And the man who stirs something deep within her numbed heart.

But when circumstances conspire for Flame to need HER help, Maddie bravely risks it all for the broken man who has captivated her fragile soul.

The Hangmen’s most infamous member, Flame, is ruled by one thing—anger. Plagued by haunting demons from his past, an all-consuming rage, and isolated by an abhorrent hatred of being touched, Flame’s days are filled with suffocating darkness, pierced only by a single ray of light—Maddie. The shy, beautiful woman he cannot purge from his thoughts. The woman he has an overwhelming need to possess…

… the only person who has ever been able to touch him.

Flame’s mission in life is to protect Maddie, to keep her safe. Until a trigger from his troubled past sends him spiraling into madness, trapping him in the deepest recesses of his disturbed mind.

His Hangmen brothers fear that Flame is beyond saving.

His only hope of salvation: Maddie and her healing light.

review

I have been waiting for this book for so long! Much like every other fan I think. Flame’s story has always been such a mystery – what do the flames, the number of 11 and the cutting all mean? And now we finally know!

Flame, like Maddie, was raised in a strict religious household but their beliefs were twisted. He has suffered cruelty and severe pain by the hands of people who should have cared for him and not instilled the self-hatred he has into him instead. Now with the Hangmen, Flame still suffers from the memories of his past and the beliefs he was taught. When Maddie entered his life everything changed. He touched her and she touched him…and the flames didn’t burn her.

When Flame killed the man who had tortured Maddie for all those years, he saved her. Now, when Flame needs help the most, it’s time for her to save him. What follows is a beautiful, heart-wrenching and utterly captivating story where two broken souls learn to heal each other. Both of them fear to be touched but crave the comfort of each other’s embrace. Together they must overcome their pasts and try to find peace.

Each book in this series has left me speechless. I’ve cried and my heart squeezed for each couple and their journey together. But this book? Wow. It’s mesmerizing, heart breaking and just plain beautiful. You will fall hopelessly in love with Flame, and your heart will ache for him from start to finish. As for Maddie, her quiet strength and her undeniable love for Flame will leave you equally as emotional. I don’t think I’ve ever cried so hard. Each book Tillie writes leaves me reeling and always with that well known Book Hangover we just love to talk about – Souls Unfractured is no exception. In fact I’d say it left me more emotionally messed up than ever before and I definitely had a bad case of happy tears at the end.

A book that’s as beautiful and mesmerising as it’s cover, I won’t be forgetting this brilliant read for a long time to come.

EXCERPT

I sat bolt up right in the chair and stared at the dark line of the forest. My heart slammed against my ribcage when a figure emerged from the heavy foliage.

My breathing paused, fear taking hold, then a familiar pair of leather boots and trousers entered the moonlit lawn. Blades hung at his sides, and his torso was naked under the heavy leather cut.

Flame.

My heart, that was already racing, seemed to beat at an impossible speed. And then Flame lifted his head, and it ceased to beat at all.

The frown that was on his face instantly blanked. His lips mumbling something under his breath, stilling mid-speech.

I clutched the blanket lying over my knees to my chest. I remained frozen, as did Flame. I had not expected him to come tonight, his friend had taken him back to his home. I could see from my window how exhausted he had been. I could see, even in the haze of moonlight, how tired he was still.

Flame’s hands clenched at his sides. His chest heaved with movement that was too quick, then he abruptly turned on his heel, and with a rigid back, he headed back into the forest.

My stomach sank as he turned to leave, and without conscious thought, I slammed my sketchpad shut, shuffled to the edge of the seat and called out, “Wait! Do not go!”

Flame stopped dead.

As did I.

Swallowing back my nerves, my shock at what I had just done, I said, “Please, Flame. Do not go… I… I am glad you are here.”

Flame’s fingers curled and uncurled at his side, then straightening his shoulders, he slowly turned. His large frame was rigid as he faced me once more. Then he just stood. Stood at the end of the forest, his attention fixed forward.

But I wanted him closer.

Still perched on the edge of my seat, I asked, “Would you like to come closer? I… I have been sitting out here alone as I could not sleep. It…” I took a deep breath, fighting my natural instinct to flee, and continued. “It would be nice to have some company.”

Flame remained still, his rigid body convincing me that he would not come any nearer. Then, to my surprise, he began walking, his powerful legs bringing him closer to where I sat.

In the still and silent night, I could hear him counting his steps one to eleven, then repeating it back to himself under his breath. My head tilted to the side as he approached, a swirl of anticipation and fear mixing in my stomach.

His skin on his arms looked newly cut, and I could not help but feel sad for him. For whatever had happened to make him need to harm himself in such a way. Grasping the blade in his hand, his fingers tightened on the handle. Like he needed the blade as a comfort.

As though he was nervous to be here with me now.

Inhaling a long breath, I asked quietly, “Would you like to sit?” I pointed at the chair to in front of mine. Flame looked at the chair through his long black lashes, and exhaling sharply through his nose, sat beside me. I smelled the oil and leather. I smelled the rich musk and spice scent that only belonged to Flame and warmth filled my bones.

He was sat beside me.

Flame was sitting right beside me.

Dropping my eyes to the frayed edges of the gray blanket wrapped around me, I played with the clustered strands of wool just for something to help with the nerves accosting my body.

But Flame was absolutely still. Absolutely silent.

Then I glanced to the side only to see him watching. As soon as our eyes met, he dropped his. A blush raced to fill my cheeks, and for some unknown reason, a whisper of a smile pulled on the corner of my mouth.

Lifting my head, I stared at the large moon, and found the courage to speak, “I did not think you would be coming to see me tonight.”

After several seconds of silence, I believed Flame would not respond. Until I caught him shift in his seat, and he said roughly, “I couldn’t stay away.”

My pulse raced at his response and I whispered, “Why?”

Flame’s shoulder shrugged, then focusing back on the blade in his hand, he said, “I couldn’t stop thinking about you. And I…” Flame trailed off.

“And what?” I pushed.

“I needed to be near you. I needed to know you were safe.”
